Vegetarianism, eating meat and food in general – Part 3

Vegetarianism, eating meat and food in general – What does the Bible say about it? – Part 3

Food is one of the few things that can bring people together in a group to enjoy time together. Food is important in a physical sense to sustain, but how important is it really? Although there is nothing new under the sun, we hear about ongoing changes in diet suggestions from so many different health guru’s about what we should eat. Now there is an ever growing trend of eating organic and whole food, which I would agree with, but the challenge then comes, where do we find them and how much are we willing to spend for them? This world is at a very interesting crossroads, and among other things, food quality, availability and variety are at the top of some of our concerns in our daily life. This week we will talk about the topic of food using the Bible as the go to reference book of choice…cont’d.

Last, Jesus made it very clear. He said “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink…. Is not life more than food…?” (Matthew 6:25). Another verse speaks of how we ought to treat each other in our different diet choices (Romans 14:1-23). And then again regarding judging eating habits just like judging in general, Colossians 2:16 says, “Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink…”. The point is that Jesus is always what our daily habits, eating or otherwise should point to. He died for us and He was raised to glory. He made it very clear about who He was. He said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty” (John 6:35). So whatever your eating habits, consider the true reason you live. Think of the miracles Jesus did with the fishes and loaves, think about the fasting that took place at length with Elijah and Jesus, think about Daniel and his men given strength by eating vegetables and think about the miracles of manna from heaven that took place in the desert of Sinai. Let’s remember that God is our provider and that all things come from Him. Praise our God!
