Should you let your past determine your future? – Part 3

Should you let your past determine your future? – Part 3

As humans we can tend to “dwell” on the past in order to receive guidance or lesson’s learned for planning the future. I have heard that “we are a sum of our experiences”, true or not, I am sure we can all come up with our own decision on that thought. We have examples in world leaders, leaders in our countries, industry, education and the list will go on. But this entire example is only on the human level. We can be judged or judge ourselves on past performance, memories and action, but what really matter? This week I will talk about our past and how it ought to “inform” how we move forward on our day to day walk here on earth, using the Bible as the go to reference book of choice…cont’d.

Last, Hold fast to YOUR faith in God and His Son, Jesus Christ. He will be justified and glorified in you and in this world in due time… Ultimately, rest in Jesus’ perfect Spirit, the Holy Spirit, this Spirit gives life; it will renew us, cleanse us, forgive us, purify us and prepare us for any obstacle that may find its way in between our relationships with God and others… (John 6:63, Romans 8:6, 2 Cor. 5:17-21).

Even Jesus said, “That whoever loves human family more than Him cannot be His disciple” (Matt. 10:37). Basically, our Creator comes first! Ultimately the past is the past, and the present is what is important today. We need to focus on moving forward in our relationship with Jesus Christ and others to allow the Spirit of God to fulfill our life’s purpose here on earth with Him and His creation… The other way of looking at it is a “new” perspective on the “world” and our past experiences, from a more pure and godly point of view (2 Cor. 3:18). We may ask, “Why did this happen to me?”, or “why was I put in this situation?”. God has a plan for each of us and He does not make mistakes, so certainly you will receive your answers (2 Peter 3:9). Sometimes it does not require answers though; this is where the testing of our faith comes in…

The Bible talks about the God of our forefathers…, so when living we need to consider are we following good example or are we worshipping the works of men or “ancestor worship” (Genesis 46:3, Exodus 3:6, Lev. 26:1, Deut. 18:11, Acts 7:32, 1 Cor. 7:23, Eph. 6:6). “Generational” sin or “genetics” can also play into this factor of illness, doubt, guilt from family dynamics, etc. (Exodus 20:5, Deut. 5:9). The Bible says, “We are a new creation in Christ, the former things have passed away” (2 Cor. 5:17). We can and ought to love family, friends and our communities, but we do not need to “take on” the curses, unhealthy habits, etc., that have through the fall, time and our own forefathers trials, influenced us in some form or another. The Bible does talk about sharing each other’s burdens, and we are all one body. So the body of Christ that is alive and well today inevitably suffers if only in spirit with other members of the body who may be suffering in a more physical form… But we must remember that we do not only have Jesus and the Holy Spirit in us, we also have the Father God (Ephesians 4:6)!

Learning, Education and Common Sense – Where did we come from and where are we going? – Part 5

We are at a point in time of history where our questions can be answered at the click of a button. We can find out the answer to almost every question we have by asking the reliable search answer request toolbar (Although how accurate an answer is another question). Traditional schooling methods at some levels are being questioned, and technology is creeping its way into the class room from all directions. So what does this all mean? How can we keep up with the demands of our daily lives, keep informed and inform those who are at the most crucial time of their lives in developing how they view the world? This week we will talk about education, using the Bible as the go to reference book of choice…cont’d.

Last, I have heard that “God will meet you where you are at”, I know that was the case for me. And that was certainly the case for Paul’s conversion, as he was stopped in the middle of travelling on a road by a divine being, namely Jesus (Acts 9:3,4). So if you are thinking about your relationship with God and Jesus Christ, do not be anxious, He will get to you “where you are at”, whether it is through a television program, a dream or vision, music on the radio, a family member, a friend or even a complete stranger. The point is you are not alone here in the world in developing a relationship with God. He is here with us, even if He seems distant at times (Joshua 1:9, Psalm 13). This is where common sense comes in, be patient and wait, wait for the answer (Psalm 27:14)!

Now let’s see what the New Testament says about education. Namely let’s look at 1 Corinthians 2; Paul is speaking of knowledge, again from above (1 Corinthians 2:7). It is the Spirit of God that reveals things of Spiritual nature (1 Corinthians 2:12). Of course there is wisdom and knowledge from the world (1 Corinthians 2:11-14). But this is knowledge that comes from the same tree that Adam and Eve ate from, that is, the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:17). The pure knowledge that gives us life comes from only one location, that is, the Spirit of God (John 6:63). If we accept Jesus Christ into our lives and mind, repent of our wrongdoings and walk in a path of righteousness, we can have this same Spirit dwelling in us, just ask for it (Luke 11:13)!

Next, let’s take a look at the Bible for where to look for proper education. We will start with the Old Testament. It says in Proverbs 9:10 and other places that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”. The next question might be what is the fear of the Lord? Let’s let the Bible answer again, Proverbs 8:13 say’s, “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil!” So now we have a wonderful and powerful direction to focus our educational efforts from the Old Testament. That is to shun evil, but the New Testament makes this saying much more gentle, merciful and kind, through the power of Jesus Christ and His ministry. I will go more into the details in the next post.

When I first started to think about writing this article, I had seen a couple of different news programs spotlighting new forms of classroom education. This included new philosophies on teaching children and changing the dynamic of the classroom in order to allow for children who learn in different ways. Although I am far from an expert on teaching methods, I know a core foundation is important. When I went to school we were far from the days that I had heard of where the Lord’s Prayer was spoken of in the classrooms. But I often wonder what a classroom like that would be like? I know I do not have all the answers, but there is one rule we can all follow inside and outside the classroom. That is “Do to others as you would have done to yourself” (Luke 6:31).

Education is not new, humans have been learning from the dawn of time. At the beginning there were obviously no physical institutions to congregate at, but we must have learned somehow. Of course, some believe in evolution, which in one sense may be true, as the systems we have developed have “evolved”, but let’s start with a little less than a few thousand years ago for now. The Greeks had philosophical schools, and before that there were religious schools, which were in a sense the same as going to church. Of course, youngsters learned from their parents on the homestead and still do. So really the education system of our modern society is multi-faceted!
