Repentance – Part 1

Repentance – What is it? – Part 1

Change can be a very hard thing to face. We get very comfortable in our daily, weekly and life routines whatever they may be at the time, but that does not always mean they are 100% right. We habits affect our attitude, physical health and mental health, both for ourselves an others around us. But what can we do about it? This week I will talk about the developing a repentant attitude using the Bible as the go to reference book of choice.

First, repentance, in essence is turning away from some behaviour, attitude and/or habitual action that causes damage to ourselves, others and ultimately our relationship with God. It is recognizing that we are doing something in our routine that is not “good” and/or sinful. Determining what is “good” and is not “good” is the challenge. We have social norms in our society, but even society can let us down at times, not to mention the fact that we can develop our own opinions of what this world, our nation and community are saying to us. And even to a greater point there are multiple stories in the Bible that show that entire communities and even nations can turn away from God, such as Nineveh, Sodom and Gomorrah, Ancient Israel, Ancient Egypt, Babylon and the list goes on. The point is we need a higher standard than just the people around us and social norms in general to dictate our behaviour, especially if those social norms are not pleasing in the eyes of our Maker. This is where our conscience, godly counsel, Biblical wisdom and the Holy Spirit come in.

More to come…
